University Core
HSS provides university core courses for all university students in multiple areas, including general education, English language competency, Chinese language competency, physical education and fitness, basic competency in information technology (IT) applications. The total course credits are 36 credits.
University Core
Division of General Education
The Division of General Education is part of the School of Humanities and Social Science at CUHK-Shenzhen. As one of the key teaching units at the university, it offers undergraduate students the university core courses in General Education and Information Technology. General Education courses including Foundation Courses: GFH1000 In Dialogue with Humanity and GFN1000 In Dialogue with Nature; GEA: Chinese Cultural Heritage; GEB: Nature, Science and Technology; GEC: Society and Culture; GED: Self and Humanity; and Information Technology course refers to ITE1000 Information Technology.
Division of Language Education
The Language Education Division (LED) provides University-core (U-Core) English instruction, modern languages teaching, and informal language learning support to our students. We offer a wide range of courses, including U-core English, second foreign languages, and Chinese as a foreign language, as well as electives in language acquisition, linguistics, literature, creative writing, and intercultural communication. We also offer a Minor in English Literature program for those with a keen interest in this area.
Division of Physical Education
Physical Education Division (PED) provides required and elective courses, which are offered to all undergraduates at CUHK-Shenzhen. As one of the core courses, physical education is divided into physical education and fitness and health, accounting for 2 credits (1 credit/semester). The objective of this course is to help students improve their interest in sports, enhance their sports ability, form sports habits, establish a healthy and active lifestyle, and cultivate their general skills such as innovation, communication, teamwork and so on. In addition, PEU has also set up elective courses such as rock climbing, golf and swimming for students.
Division of Chinese Studies
The undergraduate core course “Chinese,” inherited from its counterpart at CUHK, is designed to broaden students' perspectives on Chinese language, literature, and culture. It focuses on enhancing proficiency in using the Chinese language and analyzing works. Since its introduction in 2014, the course has gained significant popularity, evident from its consistently high scores and top ranking in the Course Teaching Evaluation (CTE).
