Division of General Education
About Us
The Division of General Education is part of the School of Humanities and Social Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. As one of the key teaching units at the university, it offers undergraduate students the university required courses in General Education and Information Technology, as well as minor degree programmes in philosophy, history, and science, technology & society. The division currently has more than 40 full-time teachers, specialising in a wide range of fields, including the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. The wide range of specialism and disciplinary background of our staff ensures the quality of general education for our students.
Vision
General Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen follows the internationally renowned teaching philosophy of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It combines Chinese humanistic ideals with Western liberal arts education and emphasises the integration of the ancient and the modern, the East and the West. We intend to help students understand recent developments in the humanities and the sciences, to expand their horizons, to cultivate their ability of critical thinking, and to see our relationship with the world. General Education lays the foundation for students learning capacity and personal development, thereby paves the way for holistic education.
Mission
General Education is a key component of undergraduate studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and an important venue for practising holistic education with our students. Our curricula cover a wide range of courses in philosophy, literature, history, sociology, physics, and chemistry, which provide students with diverse and balanced background knowledge and skills. Drawing on liberal arts education, our pedagogy helps students understand the diverse approaches and philosophies of different disciplines and encourages them to explore and develop their interest from a wide range of academic studies. In this way, we also aim to help students develop practical skills in reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking, so that they are better prepared for the changes and the challenges in today’s world.
