Dr. Zhanzhan Zhao is a tenure-track assistant professor in Computational Social Science / Development and Governance in the School of Humanities and Social Science, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. She is also affiliated with the School of Data Science.
Her research centers on algorithmic governance, aiming to develop public policies through computational algorithms that ensure transparency and justice, while counteracting local biases and inequality. Her methodological approach includes:
- Advancing sampling and machine learning tools for policy generation.
- Utilizing network science and data mining tools to simulate and understand social phenomena.
- Drawing on theoretical computer science and game theory to explore the interplay between public policy and the emergent social phenomena.
She has applied these methods to applications in several areas, including uncovering biases in U.S. election policies, generating equitable school zoning policies, and analyzing health policies related to epidemics.
She is also interested in improving the performance of machine learning algorithms. Her focus is on ensuring that prediction models are not only accurate for individuals but also fair, collective welfare-aware, and adaptable to changing environments. Key applications include predicting patients’ risks during healthcare crises, and fairly predicting students’ performance in college education systems.
Dr. Zhao is passionate about using computational tools to analyze complex social issues and is always open to collaborate with students, researchers, and practitioners. Feel free to reach out to her for any inquiries or potential collaborations.
