the Institute for Development and Governance
We are committed to the humanities, engaging in genuine dialogue and collaboration with the technological transformations of our era.
In 2024, the Institute for Development and Governance (hereinafter referred to as the Institute) was established under the School of Humanities and Social Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. The Institute, under the leadership of Professor Tao Ran, comprises a young research team equipped with cutting-edge technological expertise and interdisciplinary knowledge. By cultivating three core capabilities—issue integration, resource conversion, and brand collaboration—it strives to become an “incubator-type think tank” and a “cross-boundary collaboration engine” capable of integrating resources across sectors, balancing academic rigor with practical industry application.
Currently, the Institute addresses the challenges of our era through platform-based development. Positioned as a “strategic advisory think tank + industrial development think tank + technology application think tank,” it synergistically advances academic research, strategic research, and applied research. A key focus is promoting the evolution of humanities and social sciences from purely academic theoretical exploration towards the precise positioning of applied frontier disciplines. Simultaneously, it uses joint projects to break down departmental barriers, consolidating the comprehensive research strengths of CUHK-Shenzhen across multiple dimensions including science and engineering, medicine, economics and management, humanities and social sciences, and big data. This fosters genuine interdisciplinary integration within academic development, expands the university’s research potential, and builds a truly “university-wide, multidisciplinary, application-focused” cutting-edge service platform that comprehensively connects academia, industry, and society.
